You do need a drip tray under it, or you'll have water all over the counter. You also need to let it drain after use before putting it away. I found out when I noticed water dripping from the cabinet. I'm looking at purchasing an icosahedron mold but they run about $50. Still, the way this makes smooth ice balls it might just be worth it.
