The theory
After multiple years of journey in making clear ice, we have our own point of view on it.
We know temperature affects the speed of freezing. But how does the temperature change when ice forms in the tumbler? Let's see something special.
Tumblers cannot change the trend of the water getting colder and colder when freezing, but they can prevent the ice from freezing too fast. On the condition that the ice is more accessible to catch water than others, the slower freezing speed gives impurities and bubbles more time to escape from the transition surface.

Slow freezing allows water molecules to form a regular, hexagonal crystal lattice as they preferentially bond with each other (left).
Rapid freezing increases the probability of water molecules bonding with impurities, disrupting the orderly crystallization process and resulting in a more chaotic, amorphous ice structure (right).

Got this from the Kickstarter. The ice is pretty, the skull comes out great every time! It's not perfectly clear for me, I'm still figuring out the best way to do it, but so far it has come out with like really cool streaks through it, like maybe from bubbles going through it or something, but I think that makes it look even cooler than perfectly clear! I also got the sphere, which is nice, but it has come out more egg shaped for some reason. They're easy to remove and easy to fill! All in all, I'd definitely recommend this awesome ice mold to anyone who wants big, fun looking ice!
Hi Gg, thank you for your great review! Put the molds slower into the liner can avoid the egg shaped sphere completely, you can try it out and we are here to help any time. To make it more clear, just set the temperature as warm as you can like -10°C, I would say its a perfect temp for clear ice for me.
Clear ice is no easy feat. I tried this from their kickstarter and just made my first batch (with filtered water) which came out hazy with impurities. It was suggested on their discord that I raise the temperature of my freezer in order to obtain success. So unless you have a second freezer dedicated for ice, I would pass on this product. Going back to classic tumbler method and cutting off the bad stuff myself.

I was using a larger system to make ice, but this is far easier and makes no mess. A great addition to your bar setup or a gift for a friend. Look forward to new shapes in the future.
